The
Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited has aided the success of
general election of the Nigerian Society of Engineers for the second
time in two years.
NigComSat, in a statement on Monday, said the electronic voting system used was designed and produced locally by it.
The first of the e-voting process took
place in Ilorin, Kwara State last year, while this latest feat took
place at the International Conference Centre, Abuja during the NSE’s
yearly general meeting/conference.
The President, NSE, Mr. Mustapha
Balarabe-Shehu, was quoted in the statement as saying, “Nigerian
engineers have done it again, and this is for the second time. At least
those who may not believe what we did last year will be more convinced
now that we have the expertise in this country to solve many of our
problems.”
NigComSat said its platform included 30
networked computers that were connected to a central server and the
Internet to enable agents of contestants to monitor the election online,
real time, adding that the platform was fitted with an enhanced
software developed by the Micro Electronic Centre at NigComSat.
“This was a great improvement from the previous year,” Head, MEC, Dr. Agu Collins, was also quoted as saying.
The new Deputy President, NSE, Mr. Otis
Anyaeji, lauded the process, which he described as state-of-the-art for
voting, and prescribed it for national, state and local government
elections; adding, “This is likened to an enterprise that should be
sustained because of its reliability and fool-proof management.”
The Chairman, House Committee on
Information and Communications Technology, Alhaji. Ibrahim Gusau, also a
member of the NSE, was said to have commended the e-registration and
e-voting platforms, saying, “This is definitely good for the country.”
Gusau participated fully in the e-registration and e-voting processes.
