University autonomy versus JAMB control

Prof. Ruquayat Rufa'i -
Minister of Education
What’s the point in conducting post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination by universities all over Nigeria particularly private ones when candidates’ good performance in that exam does not really guarantee anything?  After all, what universities do with post UTME results is subject to the dictates of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
Why do universities make both parents and admission seekers go through unnecessary hardship when they know that JAMB has the final say on who is admitted to the university at the end of the day?
Parents and guardians of admission seekers spend extra money every year on air and road travels in their bid to take their children and wards to venues of their post UTME. Apart from the huge costs involved, some die in accidents.  Some parents and children were reportedly some of the victims of the last plane crash in the country.

Don Jazzy, Wande Coal still at war

Wande Coal and Don Jazzy
The break-up between Don Jazzy and D’banj shook Nigerians as the duo were seen as brothers from different mothers. With D’banj gone, the focus shifted to Wande Coal and the dark skinned singer had said on several occasions that he would stick with Don Jazzy who discovered him.
But that promise no longer holds water since Don Jazzy and Wande Coal have been at ‘war’ earlier in the week.
The young man in July quietly left Mavin record to establish his Black Diamond Entertainment. When the news broke, most people did not believe it till the recent fallout between the young man and his boss, Don Jazzy.
The verbal war the two artistes have engaged on earlier in the week, is still on as none of them is yet to surrender.

Emenike needs boldness to match Yekini –Kpakor

Emmanuel Emenike
Emmanuel Emenike has been in blistering form for both club and country of late.
He marked his return to the Super Eagles after months on the treatment table, following the injury he sustained at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, with a superb goal in the defeat of Malawi in a 2014 World Cup qualifying game in Calabar on September 7. The striker followed up his magnificent performance against the Flames with a goal  in the 4-1 victory over Burkina Faso in a friendly affair in Kaduna three days later before grabbing a brace in  the first leg World Cup qualifying playoff  2-1 defeat of  Ethiopia in Addis Ababa on October 13.

Fans fight over Olamide’s Jacket

Olamide
Last weekend’s Guinness concert, the Coulourful World of More was mind blowing! All the A list artsites were there and indeed, they gave a superlative performance.
But many guests will not forget Olamide’s performance easily.
When he came on stage to support and perform with his friend, Phyno, the crowd’s cheers were deafening. His performance was quiet exhilarating. Known to always associate himself with the ‘streets’, the young man removed his black leather jacket saying it didn’t represent the ‘real’ Olamide.
He quickly threw the jacket into the crowd and four young men had to fight over the jacket as if it was sewn with gold threads.
The guys pulled and tossed the jacket amongst themselves for several minutes with none of them wanting to let go.

I travel from Lagos to Osun to make my hair –Onoriode

Editor-in-Chief, Now Magazine, Onoriode Odah Ovwurie
Onoriode Odah Ovwurie, the Editor-in-Chief of Now Magazine, talks fashion with Ademola Olonilua
Which would you rather wear, your natural hair or weave?
Well, if I had very good hair texture then I would have rocked my natural hair and do all crazy styles of weave with it but unfortunately, that’s not the case. I alternate with other options, thank God for weave-ons and attachments.

How much does it cost you to make your hair and how long does it take?
To be very honest, there is no price tag to my hair. I can spend a lot on it as long as I like it and it suits me. I am really crazy when it comes to my hair styles because most of the time, I create my own styles which are always very unique, crazy, and very colourful. I love playing with colours on my hair. The least number of colours you can find on my hair is three. The duration of my hair styles depends on how well it fits me or how well I like it. I get tired of a particular look, easily. So I can take it off any time I get bored with the look irrespective of how much I spent on it. Well, the truth is, the lady that does my hair stays in Ile-Ife in Osun State. She comes down whenever I have to make my hair, I am sure that sounds crazy. Sometimes if she dosen’t come, I go over there. So transport plus her services is about N10,000 minus whatever weave-on or style I decide to do. On an average I spend like N15,000-N20,000. That is if I’m not fixing Brazilian, Indian or Paloma weave-on and of course, you know how much those weave-ons cost.

Jonathan approves N4bn for power transmission network

Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo
The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said despite the completion of privatisation of the power sector, President Goodluck Jonathan has also approved the sum of N4b to improve power transmission network across the country.
Speaking at the official opening of a new transmission sub-station in Ibadan on Friday, Nebo said injection of the huge sum of money would have a national transformation impact with regard to electricity supply.
He said, “It is only when the national grid becomes more reliable and efficient that power will go round Nigeria and that is why the President is showing a lot of concern to ensure that the new arrangement with the new distribution and generation companies works.
“This is in addition to the fact that the government ensured that the companies inherited an atmosphere conducive enough for operation so that they can achieve the target of the FG.”
Nebo also pointed out the negative impact of vandalism on power distribution, adding that government had stepped up effort to put an end to activities of vandals in Nigeria and send away those who build on power gas line.

MINILS DG urges ASUU to call off strike

The Director-General/Chief  Executive, Micheal Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies,  Dr.  Niyi Olanrewaju, on Friday called on the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off their four months-old strike in view of the new offer of the Federal Government  to ASUU.
Federal Government had during its meeting with ASUU on Monday and Tuesday  offered to inject N1.1trn into public universities in the next five years.
In a pre-summit media conference in Ilorin, Olanrewaju stated that strikes were inimical to national and educational development. The summit, according to him, is to focus on on labour law, institutional reforms and development process in Nigeria.
He stated that industrial harmony is an indispensable strategy that would boost industrialisation and trade  as well as attract foreign direct investments into Nigeria’s economy.
According to him, it is only in an atmosphere of industrial harmony that the potential of industrial actors: the government, employers and workers; will be unleashed for greater productivity.
Olanrewaju  said the summit will provide a platform for the tripartite body, who are major stakeholders in the industrial relations of Nigeria to discuss developmental issues that are of national importance and are germane to industrial growth.

Thousands of Haitians hit the streets in protest, demanding the resignation of President Michel Martelly, accusing him of cronyism and failing to ease poverty, as they clash with supporters of the leader in the streets of Port-au-Prince.
Protesters said two people suffered gunshot wounds after Martelly loyalists opened fire during Thursday’s skirmishes that lasted for several hours.
The two sides hurled stones at each other during the fighting, which brought parts of the city to a standstill and triggered huge traffic jams.

Remembering the 'forgotten Eagles'

Football | Super Eagles

Nigeria coach, Stephen Keshi caused national outcry when he named a provisional 32-man squad of players for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
Stellar names and dyed-in-the-wool campaigners like Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Taye Taiwo, Obafemi Martins and Peter Odemwingie were all missing from the list and more than a few eyebrows were raised.
Experts and pundits labelled Keshi a crazy gambler and the critics waited quietly as they sharpened their knives waiting for his “inevitable failure” at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in South Africa.
Keshi did not fail. Instead, he stuffed down tonnes of humble pie down the throats of his doubters and led the Super Eagles to the title in the land of the Madiba.
The 'Big Boss’ selected 23 warriors for battle in South Africa and since the Super Eagles won the 2013 Afcon in February, several of those stars have fallen out of favour in the national team.
In this piece, supersport.com attempts to identify the “forgotten Eagles” and how they have been faring since that unforgettable night at the National Stadium, Johannesburg on February 10.

Garba praises his birds

Football | Fifa U17 World Cup

Head coach of the Nigeria team, Manu Garba believes his charges are deserved champions of the 2013 Fifa Under-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates following Friday’s 3-0 win over Mexico.
The Golden Eaglets dethroned the Mexicans in the most emphatic fashion at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium thanks to goals from Kelechi Iheanacho, Musa Mohammed and an own goal by Erick Aguirre.
Garba has now taken the time to assess his side’s display at the tournament and stressed that no team deserved the title more than the Nigeria Under-17 side.
“We deserved to win (the title). We were the most consistent team and we scored the highest number of goals in the tournament,” he said.
It’s unclear what will happen to the victorious Golden Eaglets squad with fans suggesting that the core be kept together and promoted to the Under-20s along with the coach and his backroom staff but Garba will leave that decision in the hands of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Nigeria clinch U17 World Cup

Football | Fifa U17 World Cup

Nigeria won the world under-17 championship for a record fourth time on Friday, overpowering holders Mexico 3-0 in the final in Abu Dhabi, helped by two defensive mistakes.
Nigeria, who thrashed their opponents 6-1 in the group stage, went ahead after nine minutes when Mexico defender Erick Aguirre turned Musa Yahaha's shot into his own net after they were caught on the break.
Mexico goalkeeper Raul Gudino was at fault for Nigeria's second in the 56th minute when he failed to hold a wickedly swerving shot by Musa Muhammed and Kelechi Iheanacho snapped up the rebound for his sixth goal of the competition.
Nigeria captain Muhammed added the third in the 81st minute from a free kick which he curled around the Mexican defensive wall, the Golden Eaglets' 26th goal in seven games.
Nigeria won the inaugural tournament in 1995 and were also triumphant in 1993 and 2007. Brazil have won the two-yearly tournament three times followed by Ghana and Mexico with two apiece.
Their triumph, however, is no guarantee of a successful career for the players. In the past, only a relatively small number have gone on to flourish at senior level.

Djokovic, Federer through to semis

Tennis | ATP

Novak Djokovic joined Rafa Nadal as a guaranteed semifinalist at the ATP World Tour Finals with a 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory over Argentine Juan Martin del Potro on Thursday.
The 26-year-old Serb absorbed some brutish attacks from Del Potro before stretching away in the deciding set to earn himself a second victory in Group B.
Del Potro now faces a shoot-out with Roger Federer on Saturday to see which of them will join defending champion Djokovic in the last four of the year-ender.
FEDERER BACK ON TRACK WITH VICTORY
A razor-sharp Roger Federer got back to winning ways with a 6-4 6-3 defeat of Frenchman Richard Gasquet to keep alive his last-four chances.
Under pressure after losing to title favourite Novak Djokovic in his opening Group B match, the six-time former champion looked much more like his old, majestic self as he extended his career record over Gasquet to 11-2.

‘I sold Pasuma’s Range Rover Sport for N950,000’

Adegoke
Kasali Adegoke, the leader of the armed robbery gang that robbed popular fuji musician, Wasiu Alabi aka Pasuma, of his 2006 Range Rover Sport, says he sold the vehicle for N950,000.
A search on the Internet by our correspondent, however, suggested that used version of the vehicle sells for N3.5m, while a new one costs between N8m and N9m.
The 32-year-old, who is currently in detention at the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Ogun State, said he sold the car to a receiver at Cotonou.
He said, “I have a receiver at Cotonou who usually calls to place orders for any type of vehicle that he wants. Before we stole Pasuma’s car, my buyer had already told me that he wanted a Range Rover Sport. We were just on the lookout for possible victims when we noticed Pasuma’s car.”
Although based in Ogun State, Adegoke said he usually comes to Lagos to steal choice vehicles.
On the night Pasuma was robbed, Adegoke said he was merely roaming the Ahamddiya area of Lagos along with some members of his gang when the musician was sighted.

Alele-Williams seeks end to ASUU strike

Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku
A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Grace Alele-Williams, has called for the speedy resolution of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The strike, which started on July 1, has paralysed academic activities in public universities across the country.
Alele-Williams, who is the first female vice-chancellor in Nigeria, frowned on a statement credited to the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, that the Federal Government did not know the cost implication of the agreement it entered into with the university teachers in 2009.
She spoke during the public presentation of two books written by an 88-year-old retired Lagos State Deputy Chief Inspector of Education, Mrs. Rhoda Johnson-Smith, in Lagos, on Thursday. The books are titled, ‘Destined to be different’ and ‘Realities of life.’

Big match feature: 90 minutes to glory

Football | CAF Champions League

Orlando Pirates are 90 minutes away from glory as they tackle Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the second leg of the Caf Champions League final on Sunday. Kick-off is at 6pm live on SS4 HD and via live streaming on supersport.com. Pirates were on the back foot for most of the first leg at Orlando Stadium following Mohamed Aboutrika’s goal. A late scorcher by defender Thabo Matlaba restored parity and kept their hopes of a second star alive.
The Sea Robbers will venture into the Arab Constructors Stadium with a slight psychological edge following their 3-0 victory against Al Ahly in Cairo during the group stages. Nevertheless, neutrals will point to the fact that Al Ahly were fasting on that particular day and that the match was actually not played in Cairo.
Stakes are even higher now as the Egyptians are on the verge of their eighth African title. In addition to that, they will be playing in front of their home crowd. It is not surprising then that the mind games have already started with news filtering through to SA that the Buccaneers have been dumped into some unsatisfactory lodgings. Pirates can expect the heat to intensify when the match kicks off with local fans likely to make the 90 minutes unbearable.
