Food seller stabs boy over N100 debt

There was a mild disturbance on Wednesday at Herbert Macaulay Way, Central Business District, Abuja, after a food seller stabbed a boy over a N100 debt.
Many people in the area said the stabbing eventually led to the boy’s death.
The incident led to the burning of a BMW car and it took the efforts of policemen and soldiers guarding the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the area.
Trouble started when the woman, whose name could not be immediately ascertained, allegedly accosted the boy, simply identified as Nuhu over the debt. An argument was said to have ensued and the woman, in a fit of anger, stabbed the boy in the stomach with a knife.

Man arraigned for stealing N2m from bank

A 28-year-old man, Yeku Kehinde, has been arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State, for allegedly stealing N2m belonging to Skye Bank Plc.
The police said the incident happened at Oke Arin branch of the bank, in the Lagos Island area of the state.
According to the investigating police officer, Woman Inspector Dorcas Dangabi, the defendant committed the theft on March 8, and 13, 2012.

Nigerian coaches to benefit from Birmingham scheme

Five Nigerian coaches will be sent to the United Kingdom for the English FA Level 2 coaching certificate course in 2014 courtesy of the National Coaching Talent Hunt, an initiative of Ash Global Resources and MPH Communications, and the Birmingham County Football Development Scheme.
Former Nigerian stars and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winners, Austin Eguavoen, Samson Siasia and Mutiu Adepoju have been selected as judges of the talent hunt, which is for coaches between age 17 and 40.
Organisers of the talent hunt disclosed that there would be auditioning in four cities namely Lagos, Benin, Port Harcourt and Abuja, where the best six coaches from each zone would be selected for the final auditioning in Lagos, which would have coaches from Birmingham joining the Nigerian judges to select the eventual five winners.

Liverpool open contract talks with Suarez

Sky sources understand Liverpool have opened preliminary talks about a new contract for striker Luis Suarez.
Managing director Ian Ayre flew to Barcelona on Wednesday to speak to the Uruguay international’s agent Pere Guardiola.
However, any potential deal is some way off yet as it seems unlikely that the 26-year-old will agree to extend his stay until he knows whether the club have qualified for next season’s Champions League.
Suarez has been in scintillating form for Liverpool this season and is the Premier League’s leading scorer with 17 goals.

Chelsea lack killer instinct, says Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was forced to recount a familiar tale as he bemoaned his team’s latest failure to turn chances into goals after their 2-1 extra-time defeat by Sunderland in the League Cup on Tuesday.
“The quality of football we produced is amazing. We never lost a match because we didn’t play or that the opponent was stronger, it’s just we don’t kill opponents and we give them life,” Mourinho told Sky Sports after his team were knocked out in the quarter-finals.
“Every opponent knows they can score a goal (against us). We had fantastic chances to score and didn’t score.”

34-year-old Enugu-Ebonyi Bridge collapses

The 34-year-old Ovu River Bridge, which is located on a federal highway linking Enugu and Ebonyi states, has collapsed.
The bridge links Ebonyi State, through Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area, and Enugu State, through Agbani-Ugboka-Nara-Nkerefi in Nkanu East council.
  the bridge collapsed under the weight of a truck, which was plying it late at night.
Villagers at the foot of the bridge told our correspondent that the truck was carrying 900 bags of cement when the bridge caved in, as against 600 bags stipulated for heavy-duty vehicles.

Okonjo-Iweala presents N4.6tr budget to National Assembly

Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Thursday presented the 2014 budget estimate of N4.6tr to the National Assembly.
She laid the document on the table before the senators during their plenary, presided over by Senate President David Mark.

World Cup camping: Keshi proposes USA

Nigeria coach, Stephen Keshi, has proposed the United States as camp venue for the Super Eagles ahead of the Brazil 2014 World Cup.
Keshi who spoke at the weekly media interaction of the team in Abuja on Wednesday, said he chose the USA because some of the cities have similar weather conditions with Brazil. The two venues listed for consideration are Miami in Florida and Houston, Texas. The final decision will be taken by the Nigeria Football Federation. The NFF and Keshi were scheduled to meet with the Minister of Sports Bolaji Abdullahi late on Wednesday but the meeting could not eventually hold. The World Cup programmes of the coach and the FA were top on the agenda.

United, City kept apart in semis draw

Manchester United and Manchester City were kept apart in the League Cup semifinal draw made on Wednesday.
Champions United will take on the Premier League's bottom club Sunderland in a two-legged last-four clash in January and City face West Ham United who knocked out Tottenham Hotspur in the quarterfinals.
United, who won 2-0 at Stoke City to reach the semis, are bidding to win their first trophy under new manager David Moyes.

 On the pitch at least, Brazil answered key questions in 2013 with a crushing success over world champions Spain in the Confederations Cup final.
As the year dawned, Brazilian fans wanted to know the following:
– Could the five-time world champions mould a team worthy of their history with a home World Cup fast approaching?
– Could they win with style rather than functionality?
– And could the decision to ignore the never-go-back philosophy by re-hiring the man who delivered their last world title more than a decade ago prove inspired?
