Eagles roast Antelopes

Football | Super Eagles

Nigeria's Super Eagles became the first African team to reach the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil after defeating Ethiopia 2-0 in Calabar on Saturday.
The Nigerians reach their fifth Mundial on a 4-1 aggregate against the Ethiopians having won the first leg 2-1 in Addis Ababa last month.

Goals from Victor Moses and Obinna Nsofor ensured that the African champions beat Ethiopia though it was not the most smooth games for the Nigerians.
Inside the sixth minute, Ethiopian goalkeeper, Sisay Bancha pulled off a double save from Emmanuel Emenike and Moses.

Ethiopia's resistance was broken 14 minutes later when Moses scored from the spot after Hailu Aynalem was adjudged to have handled the ball in his own goal area by Gambian referee, Bakary Gassama.
It was Moses' third goal from the spot against Ethiopia in 2013.
On the half hour mark, Moses again stung Bancha's palms before the Ethiopians cleared their lines.
A minute later, Brown Ideye headed wide from close range as Nigeria turned on the heat on Ethiopia.
Two minutes before the break Onazi's shot from range forced Bancha into a diving save and Ideye bombed the rebound into the stands.

What’s your dream man like?
Let me tell you something about life, I will not come here today and tell you I want a God-fearing man, he must be tall, he must be this, he must be that.  I have once said something about what I want in a man, and then the person I fell in love with was the exact opposite. You cannot dictate feelings, you cannot dictate emotions, that’s why there’s something called love at first sight, you cannot tell.
I’m not going to clone a man that I want.  There is this thing called chemistry, once you see it, you know it. I won’t come here and tell you that he must be tall and he must have six packs, I’m not crazy about that, so basically what I want in a man are what I’ll probably see at that point and what’ll attract me at that point.

Rafael Nadal remains world number one

Rafael Nadal
Tennis star, Rafael Nadal, will surely end year 2013 as world number one, but earlier in the week, he was given a reminder that his biggest contender, Novak Djokovic, still reigns supreme at the ATP World Tour Finals.
Djokovic defeated Nadal 6-3, 6-4 to retain the title at the O2 Arena in London on Monday night.
In spite of the defeat, it will be the third time that Nadal will finish a year top of the rankings, although he will need to watch his back next as Djokovic is hot on his heels.

Nadal had said he doubted he would ever recapture his best form when he was forced out of the sport for over seven months with a serious injury. But since returning in February 2013, Nadal has been impressive.

Before his defeat to the world number two at the final game of the ATP World Tour Finals, Nadal had had a career-best record for the year. He had arrived for the competition in London with 10 tournament victories and Grand Slam titles at the French and US Opens, that took his tally of majors to 13- four behind all-time leader, Roger Federer.

Cubes of sugar
The Group Managing Director, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, Mr. Graham Clark, has commended the Federal Government on the new sugar master plan saying it has the capacity to put Nigeria on the global sugar map.

The Federal Government had recently approved a new sugar master plan for the country at a Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The government had said that the 10-year master plan would save the country $350m annually from foreign exchange, and would create  37,378 permanent jobs adding that the country only produces three per cent of local consumption while the rest is imported at the cost of over N100bn.

I need to work twice as hard as male rappers – Pryse

Pryse
Rap artiste, Princess Esindu, popularly known as Pryse tells Ademola Olonilua about her career and coping in a male dominated industry

At what age did you discover your talent?
I actually wrote my first rap verse at the of age 10 for my church’s kids choir. Well, at 14, when I really started recording, the likes of The Remedies and Plantashun Boyz were coming out. Nigeria was just beginning to pay attention to its own musicians. I remember looking up to Sasha and Blaise and admiring them, thinking I can do that. I think it was actually a lot easier back then to get the people’s attention. A combination of less competition and lower expectations, I guess. Nowadays, the standard of music is out of this world. More and more international standard artistes are emerging everyday. The emergence of MI and the Choc Boiz basically paved the way for a new generation of rappers. Artistes like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, etc, are pushing the bar higher and higher.

We’ll stop Eagles flight to Brazil – Walya Antelopes

Ethiopia coach Sewnet Bishaw
Nigeria host Ethiopia in the return leg 2014 World Cup playoff in Calabar on Saturday.
With the Super Eagles heading into the encounter with a 2-1 advantage courtesy of Emmanuel Emenike’s brace in the first leg in Addis Ababa on October 13, the Walya Antelopes would appear to have a  little chance in beating the African champions  to reach the World Cup in  Brazil, but the  North-East Africans who  must win by at least 2-0 to book their ticket insist they can upset the form book.

Walya Antelopes coach Sewnet Bishaw, captain Degu Debebe, midfielder Addis Hintsa and defender Butako  Abebaw maintain they have the quality to pick up the right result at the UJ Esuene Stadium and called on Ethiopians not to lose hope.

Funding: Military hardware left behind in Mali

Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Ola Ibrahim
The Nigerian military has left behind some of its military hardware and support equipment in Mali after the decision to pull out of the United Nations Multi-Dimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali.

Investigations revealed that the Military had not been able to evacuate the military hardware since pulling out the troops in July because of issues relating to funding.
The hardware consist trucks, tanks, armoured vehicles and other equipment used by the military at the war front.

It was learnt that the authorities of the Nigerian military discretely pulled out of the Mali operation because of the decision of ECOWAS to appoint a non-Nigerian General to command the regional force in spite of the huge contribution of the country in terms of troops.

Big match feature: Nigeria v Ethiopia

Football | Super Eagles

The African champions, Nigeria, look close to reaching a fifth Fifa World Cup finals after winning the first leg of this playoff against Ethiopia in Addis Ababa by 2-1 in spite of concerns over weather. Nigeria's Super Eagles have created a soft-landing for themselves ahead of the second leg clash in Calabar this Saturday and it is now the Ethiopians who have everything to play for.

It is going to be a tough ask for the Ethiopians to upset the applecart and go on to win in Calabar where their East African rivals, Kenya, where close to winning during one of the World Cup qualifying games in March this year but for Nnamdi Oduamadi's late strike.

The Walias will definitely fancy their chances of taking a pop at the Super Eagles just as their East African neighbours did on March 23. But they are just one leg away from a first World Cup appearance should they beat Nigeria in Calabar by at least 2-0 or any other two-goal margin.

World Cup history
Talking of their World Cup history, the Ethiopians have none at the finals proper except at qualifying level. The Walya Antelopes have never qualified for the World Cup finals and this is their closest attempt at a first appearance.

Sewnet Bishaw's men ruffled feathers in the ongoing qualification by finishing top of Group A ahead of South Africa, Botswana and Central African Republic in the second round after they were ducked three points and three goals for fielding an ineligible player against Bostwana in Lobatse in June.
On the other hand, the Super Eagles have made four previous appearances at the Mundial in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2010. The Nigerians are now close to a fifth appearance.

Boateng explains injury coincidences

Football | Ghana

Kevin-Prince Boateng has spoken to the hearts of Ghanaians who feel he picks and chooses when to wear the national colours.

The Schalke player ended his retirement from international football in August, but is yet to kick a ball due injuries he has developed in strange circumstances when it is game time.

"Of course it is a bad situation because every time there is a national team game I have a problem," he told All Sports on Friday.
The 26-year did make it to the team's camp in September when invited to play against Zambia but had to pull out following an injury he had at training.

And then in October, he had to stay in Germany just before being scheduled to join his teammates in Kumasi in preparation for the first leg of the Egypt game.
Boateng said: "Of course I can’t come if I am injured. I wanna be 100 per cent, I wanna be able to give everything when I come to play for Ghana."

France admit Ukraine were better

Football | World Cup 2014

France coach Didier Deschamps admitted that his team couldn't cope with the physical approach of their opponents after Les Bleus lost 2-0 to Ukraine in their World Cup play-off first leg on Friday.

The result in Kiev's Olympic Stadium left France in a desperate situation ahead of next Tuesday's decisive return match at the Stade de France with a place in next year's finals in Brazil at stake.

A well-organised Ukraine suffocated France's main attacking threat in Franck Ribery and took a deserved second-half lead through Roman Zozulia before Andriy Yarmolenko made it 2-0 from the penalty spot late on.

"The first half was quite even. We had chances in the second half but getting the first goal gave Ukraine energy," said a despondent Deschamps.
"It is confirmation that this team are not easy to play against. They are committed but have quality too. We have to congratulate them. They are in a favourable position. It is up to us to recover well and try to turn things around."

"We struggled because of their commitment. Ukraine defended aggressively and committed fouls. They are a solid side.

"They knew that the danger would come from Franck Ribery's (left) flank. He was fouled a lot and had very little space in which to express himself.

"We tried to respond to their physicality. Things went in their favour but it was nothing to do with fear on our part. They restricted us going forward and then got the ball forward quickly themselves."
France's misery was compounded when Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny was sent off at the end after raising his hands to Ukraine centre-back Oleksandr Kucher, who was himself shown a red card just before the end.
