Tottenham appoints Tim Sherwood as head coach

The former England midfielder guided Spurs to a 3-2 win at Southampton on Sunday as interim boss and has now been handed a contract until the end of the 2014-15 Premier League season.
Sherwood, 44, replaces Andre Villas-Boas, who was sacked last week.
“We believe Tim has both the knowledge and the drive to take the squad forward.

Villa zoo: Jonathan budgets millions of naira for animals

The Presidency will next year spend N34.5m on two wild animals for the State House Zoo and car trackers for presidential ground fleet as well as utility vehicles.
Out of the sum, N14.5m was set aside in the 2014 budget as the cost of the two animals whose names were not given and N20m for the trackers.
Extra N2m is expected to be expended on two fleet tracking base stations.
These are contained in the details of the Appropriation bill presented by President Goodluck Jonathan through the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to the National Assembly last week.
Also contained in the plan is the sum of N50m for the improvement of electrical installations inside the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

I won’t comment on Jonathan’s reply – Obasanjo

Former  President Olusegun Obasanjo   on Monday said he would not  reply President Goodluck Jonathan’s December  20 letter  accusing him of threatening national security.
Obasanjo, who addressed a news conference  through his media aide, Tunde Oladunjoye,at his Hilltop Mansion in Abeokuta, Ogun State, said  in spite of requests by Nigerian and international media  for him to  reply the President, he would  still maintain his “serenity.”
But he made it clear that  he had through his December 2,2013 letter to Jonathan, done his duty to the President, the Peoples Democratic Party and the nation, as a former President and an elder statesman.
Obasanjo, had in  his 18-page letter titled “Before it is too late,” accused the President, among other things, of placing 1,000 Nigerians on a watch list and training snipers to assassinate his political opponents.

EFCC arrests Kano Speaker, 10 other lawmakers

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arrested the Speaker, Kano State House of Assembly, Gambo Sallau and 10 other principal officers of the house.
They gathered their arrest followed a petition over the N25bn supplementary budget presented by the governor, Rabiu Kwakwanso to the lawmakers on December 5.
There are suspicions that the supplementary budget is a cover up to financial misappropriation.
Kwakwanso recently left the ruling Peoples Democratic Party with four other governors to join the opposition party-All Progressives Congress.

Dozens Killed In Syria Regime Air Raids

At least 56 people, including children, have been killed by Syrian army helicopters by dropping “barrel bombs” on the northern city of Aleppo, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Sunday’s air raids targeted Aleppo’s Masaken Hanano neighbourhood, hitting a second-hand market, a two-story building and a main road, activists said, in the eighth day of government airstrikes on the city.
“The medics say they are removing people in parts; they aren’t sure how many there are,” Hassoun Abu Faisal, an activist with the group the Aleppo Media Centre told Associated Press news agency.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, the designer of fabled AK-47 automatic rifle, has died. He was 94.
Russia’s ITAR-TASS news agency reported the news on Monday, citing the office of the presidency in the Udmurtia region where he worked.
“It is difficult and sad to realize that Mikhail Kalashnikov is no longer with us. We have lost one of the most talented, memorable and committed patriots of Russia, who served his country throughout his life,” said the statement from the press secretary of the Udmurtia administration Viktor Chulkov.
